In this lecture, Dr. Avery will be connecting the principles of pain management with practical at-the-bedside advice that can be used to relief pain in any setting (home, hospice unit, nursing home, assisted living, hospital and independent living). You will learn how to give hope in seemingly hopeless situations as you understand the concepts of “total pain” and suffering. By the end of this lecture, you will be comfortable treating pain in your end-of-life patients and residents.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the general principles of pain management
  • Navigate the WHO analgesic ladder
  • Understand the “ins and outs” of opioid analgesics
  • Comprehend the concept of total pain
  • Learn how to give hope in “hopeless” situations

Dr. Avery is National Medical Director for Diversicare Healthcare and Visiting Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia.

Board-certified in hospice, internal medicine, and pulmonary, Dr. Avery has served as the senior medical director for some of the largest and most prestigious hospices in the country. He also served as Chief Medical Officer at Golden Living and as Chief Executive Officer at Hospice of the Piedmont.

Dr. Avery was awarded the Lillian B. Wald Award for his hospice and palliative care work in New York City and the Roger C. Bone Award for National Leadership in End-of-Life Care. Dr. Avery was named “One of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives” by Modern Physician magazine.
